BIO:

Michael is an accomplished Multinational Business Executive and Leader with proven experience in successfully managing and growing significant businesses in the largest economies in Africa. A lawyer by training with over twenty-five years experience in the fast-moving and highly competitive Africa telecom industry.

This includes fourteen years experience in MTN Group across regulatory management, commercial management, senior management and Executive/Country leadership roles. Leadership positions held in MTN Group include General Manager (Regulatory Affairs), Sales Director in MTN Nigeria, CEO of MTN Ghana and CEO of MTN Nigeria.

Michael is credited with growing and cementing MTN’s strong market leadership positions in Ghana and Nigeria. Michael’s leadership and business growth achievements include the following: led a successful sales/trade transformation project that delivered the highest revenue growth in MTN Nigeria’s history (25% average growth between 2006 & 2010) and development of the Mobile Money business in MTN Ghana as a strategic differentiator and growth vehicle which inures till today.

As CEO of MTN Nigeria, he led the team to achieve a significant business turnaround in 2013 and grew the company to become a $4b business, largest telecom operator in Africa and the Number one telco in the global ranking of carriers for consistency in business performance/shareholder returns as reported by IE Market Research (October 2014). He resigned from MTN in December 2015 to pursue other interests.

Michael founded Africa Context Advisory Partners in January 2016 driven by a passion to adapt his experience towards advising Leaders, Investors and businesses seeking to acquire, establish, run and oversee growth businesses in ICT and Consumer spaces across Africa.

Over the last five years, Michael has worked with a team of senior telco professionals to provide advisory/consulting services on Telecom/ICT in areas including strategy, commercial due diligence, business operations, policy & regulatory and new business development. Michael also works actively with private equity firms, holding companies and investors seeking to establish and grow ICT/Consumer businesses in West Africa particularly in Nigeria by providing informed advisory support in areas such as investment evaluation, market entry and business set-up, development of operational best practices, management oversight & business performance management, advisory support in Governance Boards.

Michael fully appreciates that strong African businesses can only be built by sharpening focus on building strong ethical business leaders. To this end, he has curated a mentoring and leadership advisory service for CEOs/Senior leaders. Michael is a well sought-after leadership resource speaking to Executive leadership teams, Investor Groups, Boards and select audiences on doing business, leadership and growth in Africa.
